Product catalog summary
Overview: Sandvik 3R12 is an austenitic stainless chromium-nickel steel with low carbon content, suitable for seamless tubes and pipes. It complies with various international standards such as ASTM, EN, JIS, and others.

Standards and Approvals: The material meets standards like ASTM TP304L, EN 10216-5, and has JIS approval for stainless steel tubes.

Chemical Composition: The nominal chemical composition includes ≤0.030% C, 0.5% Si, 1.3% Mn, ≤0.030% P, ≤0.015% S, 18.5% Cr, and 10% Ni. Extra low Co content material can be supplied upon agreement.

Forms of Supply: Available in seamless tube and pipe form, with dimensions up to 260 mm in diameter, supplied in solution-annealed and white-pickled or bright-annealed conditions. U-bent tubes are available on request.

Mechanical Properties: At 20°C, the proof strength is ≥210 MPa, tensile strength is 515-680 MPa, and elongation is ≥45%. The material exhibits good impact strength at both room and cryogenic temperatures.

High Temperature Performance: Proof strength decreases with increasing temperature, with specific values provided for temperatures up to 550°C.

Creep-Rupture Strength: Detailed values are provided for temperatures ranging from 550°C to 700°C over 10,000 and 100,000 hours.

Physical Properties: Density is 7.9 g/cm³. Thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and thermal expansion values are provided for various temperatures.

Corrosion Resistance: Sandvik 3R12 offers good resistance to general corrosion, intergranular corrosion, and has better resistance to oxidizing agents compared to ASTM TP304. However, it may be sensitive to pitting and crevice corrosion in low chloride content solutions.

Heat Treatment: Normally delivered in heat-treated condition. Stress relieving and solution annealing are recommended for additional processing.

Welding: Good weldability with methods like manual metal-arc and gas-shielded arc welding. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment are generally unnecessary.

Bending: Annealing after cold bending is not usually required. Hot bending should be followed by solution annealing.

Applications: Used in heat exchangers, condensers, pipelines, and coils across industries such as chemical, petrochemical, fertilizer, pulp and paper, nuclear power, pharmaceuticals, food, and beverages.

Disclaimer: Recommendations are for guidance only, and suitability for specific applications should be confirmed based on actual service conditions.

Figure 3. TTCdiagram for Sandvik 3R12 (AISI 304L) and AISI 304. Pitting and crevice corrosion The steel may be sensitive to pitting and crevice corrosion even in solutions of relatively low chloride content. Molybdenumalloyed steels have better resistance improves with increasing molybdenum content. Stress corrosion cracking Austenitic steels are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). This may occur at temperatures above about 60°C (140°F) if the steel is subjected to tensile stresses and at the same time comes into contact with certain solutions, particularly those containing chlorides. Such service conditions should therefore be avoided. Conditions when plants...

under 'Heat treatment'. As filler material for gasshielded arc welding we recommend wire electrodes and rods Sandvik 19.9.L or Sandvik 19.9.LSi. In manual metalarc welding covered electrodes Sandvik 19.9.LR or Sandvik 19.9.LRHD are recommended. If flux cored arc welding is preferred, electrodes Sandvik 19.9.LT or Sandvik 19.9.LVT should be used. BENDING Annealing after cold bending is not normally necessary, but this point must be decided with regard to the degree of bending and the operating conditions. Heat treatment, if any, should take the form of stress relieving or solution annealing, see under 'Heat...
