Excavator Shields Product Guide - 1

PIPE JACKING - EXCAVATOR SHIELDS For 96- 168 inch (2,438 - 4,267 mm) OD tunneling and pipe jacking applications, Akkerman Excavator Shields are a proven partner. Excavator Shields differ from the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in that they do not have a cutter head or rotating drum, and excavate spoils with a backhoe-type excavator. The excavator and control console easily transfer between different sized shields. Excavator Shields are appropriate for traditional pipe jacking, liner plate and ring-beam and lagging tunnel building. The EX 50 Excavator, housed inside the shield, assists in the removal of obstacles and spoils at the face of the bore between the sand shelves. Operators control this fully steerable, laser- guided machine with joysticks and foot controls. For loose soil conditions, optional closeable hydraulic doors prevent subsidence from entering the jacking can. Like all Akkerman TBMs, the Excavator Shield is powered by hydraulics and guided with a laser system. Excavator shields perform with our 5000 Series Pump Units or a multiple cylinder jacking system. The Akkerman P600 electric Power Pack, an auxiliary option for power, features three interchangeable power modules that are ideal in any configuration and easy to maintain. The hydraulic reservoir capacity is 600 gal (2,271 L). The P600 houses one high-pressure power unit for jacking force and two low-pressure units to power controls in the Excavator Shield. The P600 Power Pack is remote pendant-controlled by the operator in the launch shaft. Note: Akkerman standard sizes can be customized to suit project needs. •Actual lengths and weights may vary based on specific configuration. The Excavator Shield features hydraulic closeable doors or shelves at the face of bore. The EX 50 Excavator manipulates cobbles and spoils before they fall to the conveyor for removal. This photo illustrates the laser target. This ring-beam and lagging tunnel shows the underside of a conveyor as spoils are transported The EX 50 Excavator is mounted to the top center interior of the excavator shield, directly right of the operator console. The EX 50 Excavator extends beyond the shelves The operator controls the excavator's movement with joystick and foot controls.
