STANDARD TRAINING SIMULATOR - FOR BEGINNERS AND PROFESSIONALS Åkerströms Standard training simulator is based on the standard SS ISO 9926-1, the Swedish Work Environment Agency’s AFS 2006:6, and supplementary requirements from Swedish industry. The aim is to educate crane operators so that they get the practical skills that the industry requires. The training simulator contains several training sessions and deals with, for example, precision manoeuvring, counteract sway and keeping distance to hanging loads. The training sessions contain instructional text and visual support that pedagogically explain to the student what is to be done. The student’s performance is continuously monitored and documented, which means that an instructor does not need to be present throughout the training. The training ends with a final test where the student must perform various tasks that include previous training elements. Here, the student gets to apply his knowledge in practice, but without any visual support. The student’s performance and mistakes are summarized, and the trainer or employer can determine the criteria for an approved result. In a digital environment, a person can operate a radio-controlled overhead crane under safe conditions. A virtual crane can be advantageously used for training purposes, and in many cases surpasses the training possibilities available with real cranes. The benefits are, for example, accessibility to cranes for training purpose, increased safety for all personnel, mental preparation for dangerous situations, clear criteria for an approved training, and for the employer to ensure and verify the crane operator’s competence. The technology available today ensures that the cranes operate with a high degree of realism, and that the environment looks realtistic. For the sake of the genuine feeling, the simulator is always operated with orginial radio remote controls from Åkerströms.
