Product catalog summary
Introduction to Explosion Protection
Explosion protection is essential in industries with flammable gases, vapors, or dusts, originating from mining and now extending to chemical, petrochemical, oil, and gas industries.
Directives and Regulations
The European Directive 2014/34/EC harmonizes laws for equipment in explosive atmospheres. The IECEx scheme supports international standards, facilitating global trade with country-neutral certificates.
Certification Process
Certification includes EC type-examination and production quality assurance, requiring compliance with standards like IEC/EN 60079 for electrical and EN 80079 for non-electrical equipment.
Zone Classification
Zones are classified by the frequency of explosive atmospheres: Zone 0 (continuous), Zone 1 (occasional), Zone 2 (seldom), and similar classifications for dust (Zones 20, 21, 22).
Explosion Protection Measures
Preventive measures include avoiding combustible substances, inerting, limiting concentrations, and improving ventilation. Equipment marking indicates manufacturer, use area, safety category, and protection level.
Temperature and Explosion Groups
Equipment is categorized by temperature classes (T1-T6) and explosion groups (I, II, III), with subdivisions based on gas/dust types and ignition protection levels.
AGRO Ex Cable Glands
AGRO offers cable glands with flameproof enclosures (Ex d IIC) designed to contain internal explosions and prevent external ignition, featuring mechanical stability and vibration resistance.
Specifications
AGRO Ex cable glands are made of nickel-plated brass with a safety bracket, designed for flameproof enclosures Ex d IIC, certified for explosive atmospheres with protection class IP68 (30 bar), complying with IEC and EN standards.
Procedures and Testing
The cable glands undergo rigorous testing, including mechanical and electrical-thermal testing, to meet IEC/EN 60079-7 standards, featuring secure attachment and sealing capability.
Design Parameters
Design considerations include protection for non-insulated components, larger air and creepage gaps, and mechanical stability to prevent ignition and temperature excess.
Applications
Cable glands are suitable for junction boxes, distribution boxes, terminal compartments, heaters, storage batteries, transformers, inductive ballasts, electrical motors, and lighting fixtures.
Product Variants
Various entry thread sizes in metric, Pg, and NPT designs are available, with options for different materials, including stainless steel.
Certifications and Approvals
Products are certified under PTB ATEX and IECEx standards, approved for Zones 1 and 2 for gases, and Zones 21 and 22 for dust.
Recommendations
Cables should be secured according to EN 60079 standards, ideally within 300 mm from the device, with AGRO offering cable glands with clamping jaws for strain relief in confined spaces.
Additional Options
Custom versions are available upon request, including different materials and thread types.
Key Data from Tables
Tables provide specifications for various entry thread sizes, sealing insert materials, and packaging quantities, highlighting the range of options for different installation needs.
Accessories
Accessories for Ex cable glands include locking screws, locking rings, reduction fittings, and enlarging fittings, made of nickel-plated brass or synthetic materials.

Explosion protection. Necessary more frequently than you might think. In the 19th century, electrical technology made its way into both industry and the home. Immediately thereafter, the first fundamentals for protection against electrical explosions were developed because of the methane gas and coal dust which arose during the mining of anthracite coal. The advantages of electricity were so overwhelming that people started working intensively to come up with ways to prevent any possible meeting of explosive atmospheres and ignition sources – resulting from the use of electrical equipment – and...

Directives and regulations Directive 2014/34 EC The new directives 2014/34/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 February 2014 on the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States adress manufacturers and users of equipment and protective systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Since 20 April 2016 only products approved according to the new directions and with EC declaration of conformity can be brought to the market. The old certificates according to the former directives 94/9/EC remain valid. A recertification according to the directives 2014/34/EU is not necessary....

Prerequisites for certification In the annex of directives 2014/34 EC various modules for the commercialisation of equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres are defined. Modules III and IV are often used and applied at AGRO as well, and from them two certificates result: • EC type-examination certificate • Recognition of production quality assurance Both certificates are issued by accredited testing facilities after tests have been successfully completed. EC type-examination certificate The EC type-examination certificate is the document which is issued on the base of successfully...

What protective measures can be taken to reduce the danger of explosion? Conditions for an explosion As a rule, an explosion can only take place in atmospheric air if three factors come together: • a flammable material • oxygen (in the air) • ignition source The first two factors – flammable material and air – must be present in a corresponding concentration so that they can form an explosive atmosphere. Descriptions of explosion protection are thus in general limited to the depiction of reactions with oxygen in air. Oxidation reactions which are generally associated with the generation of heat...

Explosion groups Within the explosion groups, for electrical equipment a first distinction is made between Equipment Group I and Equipment Group II. Electrical equipment in Equipment Group I is used for mines susceptible to firedamp. For electrical equipment in Equipment Group II, a further subdivision is made into explosion groups. The subdivision depends on the maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) and the minimum ignition current. Electrical equipment with approval for Explosion Group IIC may also be used in Explosion Groups IIA and IIB. Electrical equipment in Equipment Group III is likewise...

AGRO Ex cable glands nickel-plated brass with safety bracket Flameproof enclosures Ex d IIC Certification including ageing and climatic tests Principle With ignition protection type Ex d IIC, components which can ignite an explosive atmosphere are arranged in a housing. This housing must contain the pressure of the explosion and an explosive mixture within itself, and it must prevent the explosion from spreading to the explosive atmosphere surrounding the housing. Cable glands for flameproof enclosures are tested according to IEC/EN 60079-1 for the following points: - mechanical design and pressure...
