The gases and fumes given off during welding are aspirated to prevent them from spreading throughout the workplace; the aspirated air containing the gas and fumes is exhausted through a flexible hose well clear of the working area. This unit is designed to aspirate dry fumes produced by work processes such as spot or continuous wire or electrode welding, hence involving the emission of medium-high concentrations of pollutants containing gas or suspended welding slag. National and international regulations allow the use of these devices in replacement of conventional air cleaners with an articulated arm in special situations such as confined spaces and hard-to-reach areas or where the work processes are dynamic to the point at which a the use of a fixed capture system is impractical. In addition, the suction fan also serves to replace extracted fumes with fresh air, consequently purifying the air in the surrounding environment, so not only treating the area contaminated by the work process but simultaneously creating air exchange in the workplace and further decreasing the level of pollutants present. In the case of intermittent work processes however, such pollutants can be aspirated and filtered out of the air, which is subsequently returned to the workplace. In this case, in addition to the use of portable air cleaner systems the installation of ambient ventilation systems may be required.
