Magnetic Sensors SMC - SMP Series Overview

Working Principle:
Magnetic proximity switches operate using reed contacts within a glass bulb filled with inert gas. These contacts respond to magnetic fields, causing the plates to flex and establish an electrical connection. The surface treatment of these plates makes them ideal for low current or high inductive circuits. Advantages over traditional mechanical switches include protection against dust, oxidation, and corrosion, maintenance-free operation, and compact size.

Output Functions:
  • Normally Open (N.O.): The contact closes when a magnet approaches, using two wires.
  • Exchangeable (S): Offers both N.O. and N.C. functions in one bulb, activated by magnet proximity, using three wires.
  • Bistable Function: An internal magnet pre-polarizes the contact, which remains closed with a matching polarity magnet until an opposite polarity magnet is introduced.

Technical Specifications:
Available in various models with plastic or metallic housing, cylindrical or rectangular shapes, and an IP67 protection rating. They include 2-meter PVC cables. Lifespan depends on mechanical characteristics at low tension and current, while load characteristics are crucial at high values. External protection is advised for high tension and current applications.

Sensing Distance:
Varies based on magnet type and installation surface. Standard operation involves non-ferromagnetic surfaces and frontal magnet approach, but lateral magnet operation is possible. Ferrous surfaces require non-magnetic spacers to prevent magnetic flux dispersion.

Custom Models:
AECO provides custom models with various mechanical and electrical modifications, including different reed bulbs, high-temperature applications, multiple output contacts, and ATEX safety versions. Custom electrical wiring options are also available.

Diagrams show the relationship between voltage and current for different models, indicating maximum switching power capabilities.
