CAPACITIVE SENSORS

Product catalog summary
Working Principle
Capacitive sensors function through an oscillator transistor that reacts to changes in capacitance when materials contact the sensor's active surface. This change activates the oscillator, altering the final stage condition to control an external load. A potentiometer allows for fine-tuning of the switching distance. These sensors are protected against polarity changes, electrical disturbances, and short circuits, and are available with rapid or delayed switching. The plastic components are made from Makrolon, known for being non-toxic, non-static, and abrasion-resistant.
Choice of a Capacitive Sensor
When selecting a capacitive sensor, consider the material's form and composition. Non-embeddable models are recommended for a larger sensitive field, reducing the need for maximum sensitivity settings, which can be influenced by temperature, humidity, and dust. For flush mounting, avoid setting sensitivity too high. Totally screened sensors require double the sensitivity of partially screened ones for the same distance, operating under more critical conditions.
Applications
Capacitive sensors are used in applications where the material is not necessarily metal, such as limit controls for liquids, powders, and granules, and for sensing or counting objects.
Sensitivity Adjustment
Sensitivity should be adjusted in the operational position, between minimum and maximum values. Air acts as a dielectric, and humidity can affect sensitivity if set too finely. The sensing range varies with material and temperature changes. Sensitivity increases with clockwise trimmer rotation and decreases with anti-clockwise rotation. If mounted on metallic support, ensure it is earthed to avoid sensing distance alterations.
Delayed Models
These sensors offer an adjustable time delay for energization and de-energization, available in Ø 18 and 30 mm models, used in industrial applications like the food industry. Time delay adjustment is done after sensitivity setting, with the device powered. The delay increases with clockwise trimmer rotation, indicated by a flashing LED.
Available Range and Functions
Models like SC18SP-AE10 and SC30SP-AE25 offer delay functions for energization and de-energization with N.O. and N.C. contacts. M 18 and M 30 versions come with NO contact, changeable to NC using a selector switch.

High-Temperature Models
  • These models separate the electronic portion from the sensing part, allowing operation in environments up to 250°C.
  • Used for level control of hot materials like liquids, oils, powders, and plastic granules.
  • Connection cables are available in standard lengths and are resistant to high temperatures.
Installation Instructions
  • Ensure metallic containers are earthed and connect the amplifier terminal to the ground.
  • For non-metallic containers, both the amplifier terminal and sensor housing should be earthed.
  • Connection wires between the sensor and amplifier should be separated from power supply cables.
Programmable Functions
  • Functions include delay on energization and de-energization with both normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts.
  • Programmable via a trimmer, allowing for customization of delay times and sensitivity settings.
Functions Overview
  • TE NC Function: The N.C. contact opens when material enters the sensitive zone and closes after a set time once the material exits.
  • TD NO Function: The N.O. contact closes when material enters and opens after a set time once the material exits.
  • TD NC Function: The N.C. contact opens after a set time when material enters and closes instantly when it exits.

Refer to the programmable functions table for implementation details.

Installation Procedure
  • Protection housing (muffola) is used with M30 capacitive sensors for waterproof protection.
  • Made from non-toxic POM plastic, suitable for food applications.
  • Temperature range: -20 to +70°C; max pressure: 8 bar; threaded connection: 1”1/2.
  • Facilitates sensor replacement and protects against abrasion.
