Product catalog summary
Introduction
The TPL-B series turbochargers by ABB are designed for large, low-speed 2-stroke diesel engines used in ocean-going ships and diesel power stations. These turbochargers enhance engine performance by increasing power and efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Specifications
The TPL-B series covers engine outputs from 3,000 to 28,000 kW per turbocharger. It features a simple, modular design with minimized parts for easy maintenance and low lifecycle costs.

Design and Features
The TPL-B turbochargers are built with a focus on robustness, reliability, and compactness. Key features include:
  • Axial turbine with wide chord blading for high efficiency.
  • Internal plain bearings lubricated by engine lube oil for long bearing life.
  • Large-diameter radial compressor with backswept blades for optimized matching.
  • Free-floating axial bearing disk and radial bearing bushes with squeeze oil damper for high reliability.
  • No water cooling, reducing corrosion and additional piping needs.
  • Integrated turbine and compressor cleaning for operation at various loads.
  • Improved air filter silencer for low noise emissions.
  • Modular design for faster part exchange and variable casing positioning for optimized installation.

Performance and Testing
ABB ensures the reliability of TPL-B turbochargers through comprehensive qualification tests. The design includes a special bearing assembly and an emergency oil system for safe rotor runout in case of lubrication failure. Over 6,000 units have been deployed worldwide.

Compressor and Turbine
The compressor features a single-piece, splitter-bladed aluminum alloy wheel with backswept blades, achieving efficiencies over 86%. The axial turbine is designed for high efficiencies and volume flow rates, suitable for constant pressure applications.

Bearings and Casings
Bearings are designed for a 36,000-hour lifespan, with direct lubrication from the engine lube oil system. The casings are optimized for 2-stroke engines, featuring integrated turbine washing and temperature/pressure measurement, with insulation to minimize noise and thermal stress.

Emergency Lube Oil System
The TPL-B series includes an emergency lube oil system to ensure safe rotor runout if the lubrication system fails. This system is integrated into the bearing casing for larger models, while smaller models have a tank mounted on top.

Conclusion
The TPL-B turbochargers offer a combination of high efficiency, reliability, and ease of maintenance, making them a valuable component for modern diesel engines in marine and power station applications.

Design features Bearing lifetime Benefiting from experience gained with over 50,000 ABB turbochargers with plain bearings in service worldwide, TPL plain bearings are designed to run for 36,000 hours before being changed. ABB developed the new bearing assembly for direct lubri- cation by the engine lube oil system. The main axial bearing consists of a free-floating thrust disk with profiles on both sides, rotating at about half the rotor speed. This ensures thick oil films, offering extra-high resistance to wear caused by contaminated oil. Disk wear is also reduced by the appli- cation of an...
