Achieving Operational Excellence - 12380 BUSINESS BENEFITS

PURAC,with system integrator ENCO,modernized automation ofits entire biochemical plant with an integrated production and performance management software solution from Wonderware.System benefits of the project include: Better decision-making
Wonderware’s automation and information soft-ware solutions empower PURAC to make bettermanufacturing and business decisions.By produc-ing quick and easy-to-create custom reports, trending graphs and easy-to-read charts—all usingreal-time data—PURAC employees are making more-informed decisions. These reports havebecome an important part of the plant’s TotalProduction Management initiative. And beyondthe plant, this data analysis will be useful for theentire PURAC organization.Today,80 percent of PURAC’s automation is per-formed with Wonderware software solutions.TheInTouch HMI and InControl software run on 20industrial personal computers (PCs) to control 20specific production processes.Purac also uses three Wonderware Touch Panel Computers bundled withInTouch software to monitor the plant and view anyprocess with just a touch on the screen.Additional computers are dedicated to running DTAnalyst and other information software. The computers are fully integrated with each other and with theIndustrial Application Server.Instead of having just oneplant supervisor in control of the plant at any giventime, all of PURAC’s technicians can use Wonderwaresoftware for monitoring, control and data access. PURAC expects to complete 100 percent of itsplant automation with Wonderware software solutions by late 2006.One of the key goals from the beginning of the project will be met—maintaining zero produc- tion downtime throughout the entire implementation.Jose Maria Sas,head of plant engineering atPURAC,reviews the path his company took at its automation crossroad.“One of the reasons we chose this package was that data obtained from the plants, taken from the actual process, was available at the corporate level in real time.In fact, the full project will be complete when the Wonderware Production and Performance Management Software is deployed.”He continues,“We tested other software and possibil-ities,and Wonderware’s ongoing evolution seemedthe most appropriate to us.” â–  The elimination of “islands of automation”
