The vacuum cups lay horizontally on the load to be handled sideways.
In this case, the necessary vacuum cup force to move our steel sheet sideways will be calculated with the following
formula:
F = m x (g + a/ì) x ç
Where:
F = Vacuum cup force (N)
m = Mass (Kg)
g = Earth’s gravity force (9.81 m/s2)
a = Acceleration or deceleration (in this case, 5 m/s2)
ì = Friction coefficient = 0.1 for lubricated surfaces
= 0.2 ÷ 0.3 for wet surfaces
= 0.5 for wood, glass, metal and marble
= 0.6 for rough surfaces
ç = Safety factor (minimum 2 for our example)
Note: The friction coefficients provided are purely indicative; During the design stage, the values referring to the
materials of the loads to be handled will be carefully verified.
Inserting the indicated values in the formula, we’ll have:
F = 169.77 x (9.81 + 5/0.5) x 2 = 6726.28 N
Where:
F = Vacuum cup force (N)
m = Mass (Kg)
g = Earth’s gravity force (9.81 m/s2)
a = Acceleration or deceleration (in this case, 5 m/s2)
ç = Safety factor (minimum 2 for our example; for materials with rough,
uneven or porous surfaces, the value to consider may vary from 2.5 to 3)
F = 169.77 x (9.81 + 5) x 2 = 5028.58 N
2nd case – Horizontal vacuum cups, horizontal force.
