Direct Grating Writing
FOR INTEGRATED OPTICAL CIRCUITS
Direct Grating Writing is a revolutionary technique for production of integrated optical circuits. Unlike conventional techniques this process doesn't involve photolithography and so is low-cost and easy to modify the design. The ability to write Bragg Gratings at the same time enables greater functionality in the integrated optical circuits. These products have many market applications such as low-cost biological and industrial sensors capable of sensing many different substances simultaneously, or in the telecommunications industry to enable low-cost, ultra high speed communications.

Technology
An integrated optical circuit is a small silicon chip with glass layers on the top that control light in the same way that the familiar silicon chips contain electrical circuitry to control electricity.
Stratophase have developed a new technique which uses ultra-violet laser beams to write optical circuitry. Two laser beams are focused to a small spot which changes the properties of the glass. This spot is moved across the sample, "writing" the optical circuit as it goes.
The arrangement of two laser beams makes it possible to produce gratings in the circuits that are used to precisely control the light.
The advantages of this process are two fold. Firstly, the circuits are straightforwardly produced in a single step which is completely under computer control. This is in contrast to the conventional photolithography approach which is multi-step and requires a costly mask for each device. This means it is only economic in large volumes in contrast to direct writing. Secondly, the ability to add gratings greatly

Sensors
These optical circuits make highly sensitive refractive index sensors, if a section of the glass cladding is removed above the
Bragg grating. The wavelength of the reflection from the Bragg grating then depends on the refractive index of any substance placed on the exposed Bragg grating.
These sensors can be combined with other optical circuitry to give chips that measure refractive index at multiple wavelengths and so give a spectrum from the sample. This enables more selective and precise measurements to be taken.
