Thorlabs Welcomes itsNewest Strategic Partner Nanolayers GmbHInitiated in 1998, the Thorlabs Strategic Partnership Program continues to foster the development of successful newbusinesses. Combining facets of both the spin-off and business incubator models, the program allows small novel technology companies to leverage many Thorlabs resources while in the critical early stages of growth. In 2005 Alex Cable, Thorlabs President and founder, cemented a relationship with the Nanolayers, GmbH team. Initiated through Alex’s work on OCT lasers with Jim Fujimoto from MIT, the Nanolayers’ ultrafast laser and novel coating technologies were an ideal compliment to both the Thorlabs product line and our emerging biomedical imaging efforts. Nanolayers specializes in femtosecond laser technologyenabled by its core competency in ultra high performance optical coatings. Mirrors and filters for high power lasers, steep and narrow band filters for analysis and communications, and group-velocity compensating mirrors for ultrashort pulse lasers are their key products. In cooperation with Professor F.X Kärtner and Professor J. G. Fujimoto from the Massacheusetts Institute ofTechnology, Nanolayers has developed the worlds fastest laser kit, the VENTEONSUPERIOR COATINGS BY nanolayers|PULSE: ONE.Outstanding performance and ultra-compact size are hallmarks of the Nanolayers system. History Nanolayers GmbH was founded in 1998. The company originated as a research group from the faculty of Applied Physics, Light and Particle Optics at the University of Darmstadt. The company gathers many “layers” of experience from the 10 + years of intensive work and research of thefounding members. This extensive expertise was key during the development and construction of the company’s coating facilities. In 2003 the Company combined their expertise in optical coatings with new expertise in optical systems.Collaboration and new principals from MIT began a new product development phase for the Company. Late in 2005 Alex Cable, founder and president of Thorlabs, Inc. joined the Nanolayers team and Thorlabsnow offers a full set of resources to the Nanolayers team as they refine their production of the VENTEON|PULSE: ONE ultrafast laser product line. For more details on the Nanolayers products and services, please see www.nanolayers.de .
