Research & Development Facility

Research & Development Facility in Lübeck, GermanyWe are very excited to announce the establishment of Thorlabs HL AG.Thorlabs HL will develop and commercialize the promising OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) Spectral Radar technology. Leveraging the extensive experience and knowledge of the founders Christian Winter and Peter Koch, along with the expertise and knowledge of the Thorlabs OCT team in New Jersey, Thorlabs HL will manufacture the world’s first commercial spectral radar OCT device. This new instrument will complement Thorlabs growing line of OCT products. OCT is an emerging new optical imaging technology bringing together the principals ofultrasound imaging and the accuracy and resolution of optical techniques. Using OCT it is possible to image solid objects and human tissue with micrometer resolution, several orders of magnitude better than existing commercial imaging technologies. Among the OCT technologies, Spectral Radar OCT promises the ability to create three dimensional images of objects by scanning the object from only one side. Using Spectral Radar OCT, imaging of solid objects has been demonstrated within depth analysis of several micrometers. We believe in the strong potential of the OCT technology for the imaging market, andespecially in the benefits of Spectral Radar OCT. The Thorlabs organization is committed to the advancement and deployment of the OCT technology. The Lübeck cooperation helps move this mission forward. In the Fall of 2005 Alex Cable, President and founder of Thorlabs, joined with researchersfrom the Medical Laser Center in Lübeck to help commercialize the spectral radar OCT technology.Christian Winter has been developing OCT instrumentation since 1995. Through his workat The Medical Laser Lübeck OCT Group and his co-founding of 4optics AG, Mr. Winter has gained valuable experience in many aspects of optical instrumentation development. Peter Koch has worked on the development of novel OCT devices and software and interfaceaspects of these devices since 1994, both in his work and as a co-founder of 4optics AG. “Fourier domain OCT opens a new area of high speed and high resolution real time imaging in medicine and biology.”
