A reliable pre-determination of the remaining conveyor chain life is still an import request of chain users, which has not been solved satisfactorily up to now. In order to avoid chain breaks and therefore expensive operational downtimes, many chain Systems are changed prematurely.

In scientific research project the Thiele GmbH & Co. KG in Iserlohn, IMST GmbH in Kamp-Lintfort and the institute of mining machinery (GMBR) of the technical university RWTH Aachen are devel-oping in close co-operation a new System for the on-line monitoring of conveyor chains. The project is supported by the fédéral government of Germany and supervised by VDI/VDE. The objective is to develop an "Intelligent Conveyor Chain (IFK)" with an integrated measuring micro-elec-tronic System that will be able to estimate the remaining service life of the chain System before chain cracks occur.

The greatest challenges are to backup the power supply by means of a battery that exceeds the chain service life and to miniaturize the measurement technology.

First prototypes were produced by IMST GmbH. At présent a séries of test are being carried out at Thiele GmbH & Co. KG to verify the force recording and to evaluate the predicted and actual chain damage.
The scientific responsibility, the FEM analyses as well as the project administration is in the hands of BGMR. The first tests underground in a conveyor System is planned for beginning 2006.

Up to now:
Early chain System replacements by means of wear measurements during opération.
Future:
Calculation of the remaining service life based the measurement of integrated micro-eletronic components.

This System, consisting of a service life sensor and an évaluation unit is not only limited for the use in chain Systems. Based on the results and expériences of integrating micro-electronic contol units in métal environments, this technology could be transferred and used for other fatigue sensitive part in différent field of mechanical engineering.
