The preferred method of
temperature measurement for pharmaceutical validation purposes isthe copper/Constantan thermocouple, more commonly known as the type ‘T’ thermocouple. This thermocouple was developed for use within the range of –40 to +350°C and generates ahigher mV output per °C than other
industrial thermocouples in this temperature range. The tolerance v alue for this thermocouple is also considerably better than that of other thermocouple types. A lthough users frequently cut the thermocouple wire to length from the reel and form the ho t junction by simply twisting the conductors together, a more substantial and reliable ho t junction is attained by welding the hot junction within an envelope of argon. Thermocouples topre-specified lengths with the hot junction formed in this manner are available on application. A further enhancement to this method is to have the welded hot junction encapsulated in apre-formed Teflon® tip. This method ensures that the frequently annoying incidence o f condensate travelling up the inner jacket of the thermocouple by capillary action, is prevented.Encapsulation further ensures that the rate of oxidisation of the thermocouple hot junction isreduced. >
