Sensor Technology OverviewSynkera Technologies Inc.was formed in April 2003 to develop, manufacture, and market innovative yet practical devices based on a combination of nanotechnology, micro and nanofabrication, and advanced materials science. The company is focused on developing chemical sensors, ceramic membranes, functional nanocomposites and ceramic MEMS devices. A key enabling technology is the ability to precisely define sensor architecture at both the nano- and micro-scale level through ceramic micromachining of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO). Current sensor products include a variety of chemiresistor sensors based on our NanoMOS™ and HeatSENS™ technologies, as well as interdigitated and micro electrodes for electrochemical and materials analysis. Products at the prototype stage include solid polymer electrolyte based electrochemical sensors, mixed ionic-electronic conductors, acoustic wave sensors and catalytic combustible sensors. Metal oxide sensors (MOx) provide an inexpensive, rugged and reliable option for alarm detection of a variety of toxic and flammable gases. These sensors are based upon NanoMOS™ technology, incorporating complex blends of nanostructured semiconductor materials along with proprietary dopants and catalysts. The sensors feature better sensitivity and selectivity than competing devices. Gases detected include: H Chemiresistor Sensor Technology In addition to the use of metal oxides (e.g. tin oxide) as chemiresistive sensors, Synkera has explored the use of non-traditional materials as sensors. This work has led to a patent pending, highly selective, and sensitive sensor for ammonia detection. This sensor operates with very low power consumption, can be integrated with electronics as a surface mount component, and is ideal for agricultural ammonia applications. Contact Synkera directly for more information on this unique sensor. Synkera has pioneered the development of a rugged, affordable line of electrodes for materials characterization and electrochemical analysis. Platinum interdigitated electrodes in a robust ceramic body (capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 1000 Mixed Electronic – Ionic Conductors Microelectrodes C) are available in a standard configuration of 5 m width and 15 m gaps. Gold electrodes and many custom configurations (including lines, dashes, heaters and multicomponent arrays) are available for a nominal engineering fee. The interdigitated electrodes have been widely used as a substrate for materials characterization, while both platinum and gold dash and band microelectrodes have been used for electrochemical detection of heavy metals in aqueous solutions.
