24 4.4.1 Application and Combination ofTypes of Protection “d” and “e” “Increased Safety” is based on the principle to avoid sources of ignition by additional measures. However, “Increased Safety”, in conjunction with “Flameproof Enclosures”, cut a fine figure for switchgear and control gear. Modern, explosion protected luminaires also use a combination of several types of protection to achieve the best results with regard to safety, function, and economy (fig. 5). The most important type of protection for switch-gear is “Flameproof Enclosures”, usually in conjunction with “Increased Safety”. Switchgear does produce sources of ignition in normal use and therefore “Increased Safety” alone is not appli- cable as type of protection for switchgear, since
