Rod ends requiringmaintenance Maintenance-free rodends
Note SKF rod ends, depending on their
design are either completely or par-
tially coated with an oily preserva-
tive or filled with grease. Skin con-
tact should be avoided as these
substances may give rise to irrita-
tion or allergic reactions. âž” Rod ends with the sliding contact sur-face combinations steel-on-steel and
steel-on-bronze require maintenance
and must be lubricated. To facilitate
this• all SKF steel-on-steel rod ends canbe relubricated via a lubrication hole
or grease nipple in the rod end hous-
ing as well as via the inner ring ( fig âž” ) with the exception of thesmall-sized rod ends of the E and
ESA designs;• all SKF steel-on-bronze rod ends canbe relubricated via a lubrication hole
or grease nipple in the rod end hous-
ing ( fig ).The recommendations above for steel-on-steel spherical
plain bearings manufacturer also
apply to steel-on-bronze rod ends. These recommendations also applyto the steel-on-bronze rod ends of the
SIKAC .. M and SAKAC .. M series
where SKF grease LGMT 3 is recom-
mended. It is, however, also possible
to use lithium base greases of normal
consistency without solid lubricant
additives. Rod ends with maintenance-free slid-ing contact surface combinations are
generally to be used as dry sliding
bearings, i.e. they should not be lubri-
cated; the maintenance-free rod ends
are without relubrication facilities. However, the service life of steel/-PTFE compositerod ends can be much
extended by an initial application of
grease followed by occasional relubri-
cation. The inner ring is already coated
with a lithium base grease before leav-
ing the factory. >
