Rotation Industrial encoders: Precise Measuring Technique with Defined Values.
Incremental and absolute encoders, geared potentiometers.
Incremental Encodersand Absolute Encoders In machine and equip-ment engineering, these sen-sor components for the detectionof distance, angle or number ofrotations are indispensable. They
are based on the optical measuringprinciple of an encoding disk withlight transparent and opaque seg-
ments. Evaluation electronics de-rive information from electricalpulses of opto-electronic sensing
from which distance, angle or ro-tational information can be com-puted. For SIKO absolute encoders, absol-ute encoded angle steps are deter-mined instead of the incrementalpulse trains. This technique is use-
ful when reference movements forposition determination are eithernot possible or not desirable. Both incremental and absolute en-coders are available in hollow or
solid shaft design. Standard inter-faces or individual field bus con-nections with freely programmable
parameters are basic features ofthe product.SIKO product know-how in thefield of encoders allows a diversityof types extending from an econ-
omical miniature design with lesscomplicated mechanical fittings toextensive, high resolution productsin plastic or robust aluminiumpressure-cast housings. Geared Potentiometers

For this absolute measuring meth-od, angles or distances are sensedby a combination of a single or
multi-turn potentiometer and gear-ing. The position of the potentio-meter provides analogue signals foradjustment movements to the fol-lower electronics such as controlsand measurement indicators.Measurement signal conditionersensure loss-free signal transmission
and thereby provide relief fromline losses. For the controlling ofswitching actions, a built-in cam
switching mechanism is optionallyavailable.SIKO diversity makes possible indi-vidual measurement acquisition forall applications. 6
