Inspector – the intelligent vision solution

SICK is presenting, for the first time, the new Inspector at the Hanover Trade Fair 2008. The Inspector is a com-pact, user-friendly and reliable 2D vision sensor with integrated illumination, image evaluation and Ethernet in-terface. The Inspector can inspect parts in any orientation and position, and distinguish between parts that are in order and defective parts in real time. The Inspector has been developed for the most varied of tasks. Its rugged design is even suitable for difficult situ- ations, e.g. in the automotive industry. Its intelligent and rapid evaluation pro- cess also allows it to keep up with the fast speeds found in the packaging industry. Automatic part inspection: it’s never been easier or more reliable As powerful as a industrial camera and as easy to operate as a standard photoelectric switch – the Inspector combines these properties to a hitherto unknown ex- tent. Its two illumination variants – in the form of a ring or with diffuse dome light – are solidly integrated in the metal housing, with an enclosure rat- ing of IP 67. The dome light is particu- larly advantageous for highly reflective surfaces and provides a very homo- geneous image, free of reflections – the key to the successful solution of applications.The Inspector offers a variety of con-figuration methods – from signal-con- trolled teach-in to external teach-in of a new part contour, or PC-supported con- figuration. Configuration by PC offers rapid teach-in in just a few steps as well as “expert parameters” if required.

Bodyguards for harsh conditions

Reliable quality assurance in any orientation The magnetic safety switches of the RE series master the challenges of vibrations and imprecisely mounted separating protective equipment, as well as operating under harsh condi- tions. They therefore ensure a high level of plant availability and process reliability. The Inspector does not require any re-peating identical positioning for part inspection. The Inspector’s soft-ware algorithms evaluate a test- piece’s edges, grey values or pixel sums within a few milliseconds, regardless of its position or align-ment. No trigger signal is necessary during continuous operation – evalu- ation takes place as soon as the object is detected in the measurement field. Time-optimised image evaluation even permits the inspection of parts in high- speed processes, e.g. in the packaging and beverages industries. In the auto- motive sector, the inspection of compo- nents during assembly, in particular, is a typical application.
