Technical guide
Diamond or CBN?
Diamond is generally considered to be the hardest cutting material of all. Given its affinity to carbons, it is best to avoid using diamond in operations where the workpiece has a high carbon content.
SU Formtool uses diamond both when cutting cermet, carbide and special materials and in profiling applications.
According to the actual application, it is possible to choose between natural diamond and synthetic diamond.
As a cutting material, CBN is suitable for all machining operations on steel that has a hardness level of around 60 ±3 HRC.
Both materials are used exclusively for high precision applications.

ABN or CBN?
This decision need not worry the end user. It is simply a distinction in name made by suppliers and not a variation of the actual chemical composition or quality of the material which is practically identical.
Morphology
There are micro-crystalline and mono-crystalline types of CBN. The micro-crystalline type generally causes a negative cutting angle while the mono-crystalline type produces a positive cutting angle. Whichever result you obtain and the actual grinding parameters depend upon which type you choose.
Naturally there is always an exception to every rule particularly when dealing with special requirements in terms of profile and working conditions.
