The Issue

Area Heat Stress monitors don’t recognize that physiological responses to heat stress can varywidely from person to person. More physically fit workers may tolerate heat better than lessphysically fit workers. Workers acclimatized to the environment may tolerate heat better thanthose unacclimatized to the hot environment or work load. Persons taking prescription orover-the-counter drugs may also be less tolerant of heat than when they are not takingthese drugs.

The Solution

Quest Technologies’ Personal Heat Stress Monitor provides an additional level ofprotection by directly detecting the individual’s physiological response. Coretemperature of the external auditory canal near the tympanic membrane of the earis the vital sign monitored and recorded to verify an individual’s response to heatstress. User-selected alarm trip points provide an audio alert to worker’sexperiencing elevated core temperatures. This device was created to work inconjunction with a well-managed heat stress safety program. Recorded datamay also be used to evaluate worker response to heat stress loads and assistin developing preventive measures.
