Flexibility and OEM Adaption The maximum travel range of aRodDrive is limited by the length of the rod itself. The pushing/pulling force of the M-674 is 7 N. Selecting the typeof the piezomotors used, vari-ous pushing and holding forces to several 10 N can be achieved

RodDrives can be operated inclosed-loop with the C-865 piezo industrial motor controller. That specialized controller achieves speeds up to 400 mm/s with very short settling times, and has integrated drive electronicsfor the RodDrive. M-674 PILine

® OEM piezo lin-ear motors such as P-661 (seepage 10-14) and guided micro- positioning systems such as the M-661 series stages (see page 10-16). RodDrives may replace classical drive ele- ments like rotary motor/lead-screw assemblies, or magneticlinear drives integrated into a micropositioner. They consist of a rod which is preloaded by piezo linear motors from twosides. Depending on the way of integration, either the rod or the motor block is coupled to the moving platform. The basicfeatures PILine
® piezo linearmotors offer compared to clas-sical drives are
± 10 V analog signal from thecontroller. Please request more information from the corre- sponding supplier. High velocity Compact size Self-locking at rest, with no heat dissipation Non-magnetic and vacuum- compatibleStandard RodDrives are non-guided actuators and come without position sensors.Guiding and position feedbackmust be provided by the micro- positioning system the Rod- Drive is attached to. Working Principle
Application Examples RodDrives employ a new, patented, ultrasonic drive de- veloped by PI. The highly com- pact, integrated P-664 piezo motors can provide accelera-tions of up to 5 g and velocities of 400 mm/s, together with high resolution and holdingforce. Because the integratedceramic motors are preloaded against the rod, RodDrives resist motion with an intrinsic holding force when at rest. The result is very high position sta- bility without the heat dissipa- tion common with convention- al linear motors. Furthermore, there are no gears, leadscrewsor other mechanical compo- nents to contribute play or backlash.
