VI. Closed-Loop ComputerControl: Displacement of the PZT iscontrolled via the RS-232 com-
puter interface with a resolu-
tion of 20 bits. The DC-offset
potentiometer and BNC analoginput are inactive when in com-puter control mode. Powerful Computer Interface The RS-232 interface supportsfast communication with thehost computer, with up to 300bidirectional read/write opera-
tions per second, and also in-
cludes a high-precision 20-bit
D/A and A/D
industrial converter for opti-
mum position stability and res-olution. Wave Table User-defined data points, cal-culated with an arbitrary func-
tion, can be stored in a WaveTable in the E-665 for later out-put under control of an exter-
nal trigger. Multi-Axis Network up to 12 Channels Up to 12 E-665s can be net-worked and controlled over a
single RS-232 interface. Parallel
networking is used between
the E-665’s, providing higher
data rates than possible withserial links. Software / Command Set The E-665 controller comeswith Windows™ installation
software, DLLs and Lab View™
drivers. The command struc-ture of the extensive commandset is based on the PI General
Command Set (GCS). The GCS
was developed by PI to facili-
tate the programming and
operation of a wide range ofdifferent devices with a com-mon command language, thus
reducing the programming
effort in the face of complex
multi-axis positioning tasks. It
is also supported by the E-516
Computer Interface Module, and most PI nanopositioningcontrollers and motor con-
trollers. For more information
on GCS, see p.9-28. >

tentiometer in the range of zeroto nominal displacement. V. Closed-Loop ExternalControl: Displacement of the PZT is con-trolled by an analog signal inconjunction with the DC-offset
potentiometer. With a unipolar
actuator, the controller is typi-cally set up and calibrated in
such a way that 10 V corre-
sponds to maximum nominal
displacement and 0 V corre-
sponds to 0 displacement. TheDC-offset potentiometer adds a0 to 10 V bias to the input,

ter in the range of 0 to 100 V. The E-665 is a bench-top piezolinear amplifier and position
servo-controller with integrat-
ed high-speed RS-232 comput-
er interface and 20-bit D/A con-

-20 to 120 V. Versions are avail-
able to operate with SGS, LVDT
or capacitive
position sensors,
making the servo-controller
suitable for a wide variety of PIpiezo actuators and stages. TheE-665 can be operated in six
different ways: II. Open-Loop External Control(amplifier mode): Output voltage is controlled byan analog signal applied to theBNC input. This input plus any
DC-offset must be in -2 to +12
V, which, times the gain factor
of 10, gives an output voltage
range of -20 to +120 V. The DC-offset ranges from 0 to 10 Vand is set with the front-panelpotentiometer (see page 6-52),
allowing continuous shifting of
the 14-volt-wide input voltage
range within -12 to +12 V. >
