Questions and Answers Q. My cholesterol is fine. Why should I worry about having plaque and cardiovascular disease? A. Cholesterol is an important risk factor, but it does not tell the whole story. Too often, people with “normal” cholesterol still have a significant cardiovascular event (heart attack or stroke). In a study of 136,905 patients with heart disease, 77% had normal cholesterol levels and would have been misclassified as low to moderate risk of heart attack.1) The latest European guidelines (2012) on cardiovascular disease prevention now recommend to look also for evidence of atherosclerosis (an early warning sign) such as increased CIMT/plaque build-up to identify individuals that are at higher risk.2) www.escardio.org/guidelines Q. I did have high cholesterol, but I am taking a statin medication, watch what I eat and exercise frequently. Should I still be scanned for plaque? A. Although you are on the right track, you should discuss with your doctor about having a scan because you may be at significantly higher risk than you think, and the results may increase your adherence to medication and a heart healthy life style. How is the CardioHealth scan done? The CardioHealth Station uses innovative ultrasound technology that can be performed easily and quickly in your doctor’s office. Using a handheld ultrasound probe, the carotid arteries in the neck will be scanned to measure the wall thickness and detect hidden plaque build-up. The entire test is painless, there is no exposure to dangerous radiation and no discomfort. The results are available immediately and will be explained by the doctor. It takes 5 minutes and can save years of your life Q. What if I had a exercise ECG test and I was in perfect health? A. These tests are useful when significant arterial disease is present but not sensitive enough to identify early stages of atherosclerotic disease. Q. What are the warning signs of plaque? A. There often are no warning signs! Most victims of heart attack or stroke are caught completely off-guard, as they had no prior symptoms. Q. Is atherosclerosis reversible? A. Studies have shown that medication and adherence to a heart healthy life style slows down or stabilizes the process of atherosclerosis, the earlier you start the more effective it will be. Q. Who should do this scan? A. Everyone over 35 years of age, especially if one of the following condition applies: Smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, high bloodpressure or family history of cardiovascular disease. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood to all organs of the body and are made up of three layers: inner (intima), middle (media) and outer (adventitia). The intima is the innermost layer that lines the inside of the artery. Healthy arteries are strong and elastic with smooth thin walls allowing blood to flow freely through the vessels. Arterial plaque formation. Plaque is a build-up within the wall of an artery and results in a disease...
