What is new? What is important?
Functional Safety for signal generation, signal transmission and signal evaluation The internationally established standard IEC/EN 61508 has been in force since the middle of 2004. This focuses on the functional safety of E lectrical, E lectronic and P rogrammable E lectronic S ystems (E/E/PES).The previous national standards in the form of DINVVDE0801, DINV19250 and DINV19251 have therefore lost their justification for existence and were withdrawn on 31.07.2004.Thus far, four sector standards have been derived from IEC/EN61508: >
61508
IEC/EN 62061: Machinery sectorMedical sectorIEC/EN 61511:Process sectorIEC/EN 61513:Nuclear sector IEC/EN61508
What does this mean for youas the customer andequipment user? For process technology As the sector standard, IEC/EN61511 reflects the current state of technology. For machinery and plant construction The current state of the art here is reflected by IEC/EN62061 as the sector standard. For machinery and plant, which are considered in the light of the provisions of EN954, the reference has changed from the old DINVVDE0801 (Fundamentals for
professional computers in systems with safety tasks) to the now current IEC/EN61508 and its sector standard IEC/EN62061.At the same time, due to the process of internationalisation, the value of EN954 has also changed. It has received the status of an international standard and will be known henceforth as ISO13489-1.
Professional burner professional controls In the area of burner controls, previously covered by VDE0116, DINEN50156-1 now reflects the current technology. For the electrical equipment of firing plant - part 1: specifications for application planning and construction, DINEN50156-1 is based on IEC/EN61508. Requirements for
proximity detectors VDE0660T209 is supplemented by VDE0660T214/A1. VDE0660T214/A1 corresponds to IEC/ENDIN60947-5-3/A3 "Requirements for proximity switches with specified behaviour under fault conditions". Thus also creating the reference to IEC/EN61508.Today in process technology and in the other sector-specific standards E/E/PES components can be used, as soon as these satisfy the specifications of IEC/EN61508. Other standards will follow in the future, which will likewise be aligned with the specifications of IEC/EN61508. What must you comply with?Example: process technology Process plant involves risks. These risks are determined by the type of process, the substances involved and the plant environment. In order to avoid risks, in the first place, the procedures and processes selected should be as safe as possible. Secondly, mechanical protection devices should be the preferred choice. These are constructional precautions (minimum distances, protective
professional screens, separating walls, adequate
professional container wall thickness, selection of materials, etc.). It is only when neither alternative methods with inherently greater safety or reliable mechanical protection devices are available, that the reduction of risk by means of
process governor devices is recommended. Process control devices are a means of reducing process risks. But when this path is chosen, the functional safety and reliability of the field instrumentation and of the control and
industrial monitoring systems must be assured in the form of adequate precautions to avoid faults and fault detection and fault rectification must also be guaranteed. >
