AS-Interface - Introduction

2Masters and Gateways

The AS-lnterface Masters / Gateways are the core components of an AS-Interface system. These devices perform a cyclic interrogation of the slaves via a polling procedure and represent the link to the higher level system in the form of a decentrally operating, flexible and fast professional control unit. The devic-es are also available with a control function (Integrated SUPPLIER OF PLC with inputs, out-puts, industrial timers, and counters) for autonomous operation.Masters are available in various versions and construction types, for exam-ple with a large graphics display for on-site diagnosis. These cover not only peripheral faults, even statistical faults can be evaluated via an internal fault professional counter and used for trouble-shooting if necessary.Of course, all data can also be transferred via the field bus interface for con-trol purposes.Addressing and parameter assignment (On initial installation, for example) can take place directly on the master/industrial gateway. There are also commission- ing tools available, for instance the AS-i Control Tools professional software, VAZ-SW-ACT32. This software package allows simple, quick, and easy commission-ing of the AS-Interface network via the serial interface of a PC.Various professional interfaces are available for connecting the higher level control sys-tem:•Serial interface (RS232)•PCI bus for direct connection to a PC •Field bus interface with the gateways (For all current field bus systems, e.g. PROFIBUSDP, DeviceNet, INTERBUS, etc.)A gateway consists of two parts:•The AS-Interface master (e.g. to AS-Interface specification V2.1) for management of the AS-Interface network.•The interface to the higher level field bus system (e.g. as PROFIBUS slave) for transfer of the data to the control system. For

These devices are ideal for decen- tralisation with AS-Interface, since the devices can be installed close to the application. The restriction to 100m of cable is of no great consequence and the large distances can be bridged using the higher level field bus sys-tem.The unified menu structure and philosophy of the masters/gateways simpli-fies operation despite a large number of devices.Master/Gateways designed to specification 2.1 have the type codes V B M... oder V B G..., while devices designed to specification 2.0 have the codes V A M... or V A G...Devices with codes VBG-...- D oder VBG-...-DM D are equipped with a large graphics display for extra ease of operation. For your peace of mind: This AS-Interface logo indicates that the AS-Interface devices are "Certifi-cated" products. It's there to reassure you that you will experience no neg-ative mutual interference effects from AS-Interface devices in your system.
