Breaking the motor miniaturization barrier SQUIGGLE motors give product designers the ability to create motion and add new features in smaller and smaller products. Electromagnetic motors reached their limit of miniaturization at about six millimeters in diameter. Below this limit, efficiency and reliability drop sharply as more power is wasted as heat and less torque is produced to overcome internal friction. MEMS (micro-electro- mechanical systems) techniques, on the other hand, can produce nanometer-scale micro-motors – but these futuristic devices are limited to microscopic push force and travel range.
