MC-31DB motor driver - 30035 MC-31DB Motor Driver

for SQL-1.8-6 SQUIGGLE motors

The MC-31DB is a compact driver for the SQL-1.8-6 piezoelectric SQUIGGLE motor, the world’s smallest linear motor. It features New Scale’s NSD-1102 dedicated motor driver ASIC and all external components necessary to drive one or two SQUIGGLE motors, along with input/output connectors. This miniature drive board makes available all the capabilities of the NSD-1102 ASIC. An industry-standard I

Function Input voltage is 2.8 to 5.5 VDC. The output signals are phase-shifted square waves with ultrasonic frequency, boosted to drive the piezoelectric elements of the SQUIGGLE motors. The output voltage can be dynamically varied via the I

C interface is also used to define the direction and duration of the output driver signals. The period count register defines the switching frequency of the motor. This can be dynamically adjusted from 140 KHz to 180 KHz for optimum motor performance. The pulse count register sets the number of pulses sent to the motor, which correlates to distance traveled. The period count and pulse count registers can be set independently for the two motors. Refer to the NSD-1102 data sheet for detailed ASIC specifications including how to use the I

SQUIGGLE motor and controller solutions

Use the MC-31DB as your SQUIGGLE motor driver, as an evaluation board, or as a reference design for incorporating the NSD-1102 ASIC into your own PCBs. The MC-31DB is also used as a daughter board in our

MC-3100 controller , a full-function control system for rapid solution evaluation and prototype testing. The MC-3100 accepts position feedback from sensors or switches, and can be used in either closed-loop or open-loop mode. It includes New Scale’s software suite featuring an intuitive user interface and scripting environment with ActiveX function library.

Input power while the motor is moving depends upon motor speed and load (see graph on page 2). To conserve battery life the controller can be switched to stand-by mode (XPD low), resulting in a standby current draw of approximately 5 µA. Alternatively, the power to the controller can be turned off completely and the motor will hold its last position with the power off. Start-up time (time for the motor to start moving) is less than 2 msec, whether from standby mode or from power-off.
