DSC 404 F3 Pegasus

®

– Applications

In this example, two differentsamples of the same aluminum alloy(Al-Mg-Si) were measured with the DSC 404 F3 Pegasu s
® during heatingand cooling. The melting and solid-ification of the alloy are clearlyvisible in the measurement results. The differences between the twosamples, however, are minimal. Thecharacteristic temperatures (onsets, peaks) all agree within 0.3 K. The differences between the peak areasare less than 1% for both heatingsand coolings. The good agreementbetween the two measurementresults demonstrates the excellent performance and reproducibility ofthe DSC 404 F3 Pegasus
® .The specific heat flow rate of ironwas measured between room tem-perature and 1620°C using a DSC404

Phase transitions of iron Reproducible testing ofaluminum alloy

F3 Pegasus
® equipped with aRhodium industrial furnace. The peak at770°C is due to a change in the magnetic properties of the material(the Curie transition). At peaktemperatures of 926°C and 1399°C,two structural changes (changes inthe crystal structure) occurred. Most likely due to impurities in the mate-rial, these temperatures are slightlyshifted from the literature values forpure iron. Melting occurred at1534°C (extrapolated onset). The heat of fusion was 266.1 J/g. This isless than a 1.5% deviation fromtypical literature values for pure iron.
