LABEL VALIDATION

V ALIDATION The manufacturer needed to read the bar codes on two AIAG shipping labels, one applied to opposite sides of each shipping tote, to verify the encoded information was accurate and the two labels were identical.

THE INSTALLATION

The two MS-860s were connected to the network via a USB keyboard wedge. The scanners were in- stalled on opposite sides of the conveyor and set up in a daisy chain configuration, sending data through a concentrator to emulate the USB connection. Since the AIAG shipping label contains multiple bar codes, they needed a scanner that could read all of the codes in real time without slowing production speeds. As the totes travel down the conveyor, the scanners read the shipping labels on the two sides of the tote. The data is then sent to the PLC, where the information is verified for accuracy. If the data is in inaccurate, the tote is pulled off the line by a diverter.

WHY THE MS-860

The MS-860 provided the following features:
• Programmable sweeping raster
• Daisy chain capability
• High scan speed
• Built in AIAG data out-putting formatting

THE APPLICATION THE BOTTOM LINE

The application required a scanner capable of reading all of the bar codes on the label in one read cycle, and then output the data in real time for routing purposes. The MS-860’s programmable features such as the sweeping raster and high scan speed enabled it to read all of the bar codes on the shipping label. Since the scanner could output the data in real time, the manufacturer was able to increase line speeds, yet still verify the data’s accuracy as well as use it for routing decisions down the line.
