MAFI equipment and systems are often found in applicationswhere heavy goods need to be moved. This is exactly whathappens at PLU in Rostock harbour, where paper rolls weighingup to 8 tons are discharged.In Germany they have a saying: “Paper is patient”. That may betrue, but only to a certain extent. Above all else, paper isextremely sensitive, a fact which is not lost on PLU (Papier-Lager- und Umschlaggesellschaft mbH), a company which specialises in unloading and storing paper. For any harbour, paper handling is an extremely demanding business. Moderntransportation systems, fork lifts and clamping technology,scanner technology and first-class storage are all absolutely fundamental requirements.Between 1991 and 2003, around 4.0 million tons of paper rollsfrom paper plants in Germany, France, Austria, Scandinavia,Finland and Russia were unloaded, with the current rate at around 500,000 tons per year and rising.Since 1991 the SHRU (Seehafen RostockUmschlagsgesellschaft mbH) have been working on behalf ofthe company UPM-Kymmene Sales, who are based at the Rostock harbour. In 2003 these activities were transferred to the 100% subsidiary PLU Papier-Lager- undUmschlaggesellschaft mbH. Today, regular export shipments ofprinting paper pass through Rostock on their way to the UK and the USA. After the purchase of a storage hall with 10,000 m_ of floor space, SHRU also opened two storage warehouses calledKaihalle 5 (opened in April 2002) and Kaihalle 7, bringing the
