| The number of logistics service providers has steadily increased in recent years. Some of them have concentrated on very specific sectors - like Chemion Logistik GmbH. This company has specialised predominantly in the chemical sector and associated areas. It needs special transport equipment for this business. Chemion's company headquarters are in Leverkusen on the Bayer AG site. This arrangement is no accident. The company is a hundred-percent subsidiary of the chemical group. While in the past the logistics service provider tasks were an integrated part of Bayer, this area became independent on 1 July 2001 as part of an outsourcing project. It was then that Chemion Logistik GmbH was born. Comprehensive range of services The range of services provided to the chemical sector by the company is large. Internal transport is undertaken by lorry or truck from plant to plant. Transport for waste disposal is also performed. Bulk material and packaged goods of all hazard classes are stored. More than 200000 m2 of floor area are available for specific solutions to meet customers' needs. A comprehensive range of equipment is used such as forklifts, special vehicles, tank containers and pallets. This equipment is inspected and serviced by special in-house workshops that are even used by container manufacturers. If Chemion does not have a specific vehicle, it is procured in the interest of the customer. Over 400 vehicles and 6500 items of equipment are available to the customers in the vehicle and equipment pool. Material management and the control of modern production processes depend on the reliable exchange of data. For some time Chemion has therefore been taking over complete despatch processing for an increasing number of customers. The basis of this activity is comprehensive knowledge of the actual legal situation, handling hazardous goods and customs procedures, as well as a high level of integration into the customers' EDP systems. |
