Providing safety with optoelectronicprotective devices

IEC 62046/TS/Ed.1 contains essential information for selec-ting, using, connecting and inspecting no-contact safety equipment and circuit mats. It is intended for persons creating standards, machine manu- facturers, testing centres and anyone occupied with profes- sional installation of safety equipment. Regional requirements or machine-specific C standards must be observed with hig- her priority, however. Basic iterative process for selecting optoelectronic safety equipment1.Determine the protected area Perform an evaluation of risk as described in ISO 14121 (EN 1050) for each hazardous area. Determine the location and size of the protected area. The properties of the machine should be taken into consideration, as should the possibilities forbypassing the safety equipment and any possible consequences. 2.Define the protective function

When selecting safety equip-ment, fitters must make certain that the safety performanceprovides a suitable level of risk reduction. Standard ISO 13849 (EN 954) contains a method for selecting the safetycategory of the machine control system to meet the risk inquestion. In reference to the safety-related capability in de- tecting and responding to errors, the standardised sensor types of IEC 61496-1 roughly correspond to the control unitcategories of ISO 13849.
