Modulated LED Light Source
For Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging
The modulated Light Emitting Diode (LED) is used as excitation light source in systems for
Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) that operate in the frequency domain.
Modulated LEDs of different wavelength bands are available. The output light intensity can
be varied over a wide range and the maximum excitation power available at the sample is
comparable with that of other light sources.
The system consists of an RF-shielded LED assembly that is fitted in the standard mercury
lamp housing as provided by the microscope suppliers Nikon, Olympus, Leica and Zeiss.
The LED assembly is connected via a shielded cable to the Power Supply/Control Unit
(PS/CU) that provides the DC and AC power to the LED.
To build a complete set-up for lifetime imaging, a compatible modulation signal generator
(control of modulation frequency and amplitude), modulated intensified CCD camera and
dedicated image processing software are available from Lambert Instruments.
