Detector Two BGO (bismuth germanate / Bi4Ge3O12) crystal-photomultiplier assemblies separated by < 0.20" directly face one another, with the cell in between. Close spacing combined with small cell volume results in near-4p geometry and a high probability that each annihilation gamma will be incident on one of the crystals, thus assuring a coincidence count. The crystals are encapsulated in a thin aluminum shell to allow gamma-ray penetration while preventing light interactions between them, and also between the PMTs. The 1" x 1" crystals have an absorbtion efficiency of >90% for 511 KeV gammas....
