Three years ago, the Eugene, Oregon, company began manufacturing the EDS 309 Pull-Flail in response to rising California restrictions on burning tree prunings. The towable brush industrial shredder grinds tree trimmings into mulch using a rotor that, until recently, was independently powered by a 242-kW (325 hp) PowerTech 6081H engine. Now company steps up to a new level of emission compliance with the new 298-kW (400 hp) PowerTech Plus 6090H. "Customers want equipment that will comply with the Tier 3 (and Stage III A) emission standards," relates product manager Jamieson Rear. In addition to being cleaner burning, he says the higher-horsepower PowerTech Plus engine offers some performance advantages. "Customers are asking for more ground speed. There's a huge number of acres of nut orchards and only a small window of opportunity to mulch the trimmings," he explains. "More ground speed is critical to get over the acreage. Better canopy coverage. Switching to PowerTech Plus engines also increased the power and ground speed of Rear's high-velocity Power Blast industrial sprayer. After years with the 127-kW (170 hp) PowerTech 6.8L engine, the company was able to maintain the same engine displacement, yet beef up power to 168-kW (225 hp). And more power means more air to reach the tops of tall trees. "Ground speed is based on how long it takes to get spray up to the top of the tree," explains Rears. "More air volume allows you to pick up the pace." | | | | | | The EDS 309 Pull-Flail is independently powered by the new PowerTech Plus 6090H diesel engine. | | | | | | | | | | As orchard work shifts to a higher gear, workers appreciate working with companies like Rears and John Deere, who understand the orchard business. "Contractors will run 24 hours a day, 6 days a week," says Rears. "Downtime is a killer for them. If there's ever a problem, it helps to work with companies that you have a relationship with ... who understand the pressures of the business. "Working with John Deere is important to our customers because they don't have to forge a new relationship," says Rears. "It's a relationship that they already had." | | | | | | | | | | The PowerTech Plus 9.0L engine puts more power to the rotor, making it possible for the Engines: John Deere Tier 3/Stage Rears brush shredder III A PowerTech Plus 6068H — a to move through 168-kW (225 hp), 6-cylinder, 6.8L, the nut orchard at . t . „ , , ,. , . a faster pace. air-to-air aftercooled diesel engine; ^__J"_ Tier 3/Stage III A PowerTech Plus 6090H — a 298-kW (400 hp), 6-cylinder, 9.0L, air-to-air aftercooled diesel engine.
