COVER STORY
Power to push and drill
Highway Manufacturing uses John Deere engines and transmissions for deep-digging torque
Engine torque is a vital ingredient for a manufacturer of pressure diggers and foundation drills. "Torque equates to foot-pounds of digging power," explains Todd Martens, sales manager for Highway Manufacturing of Hopkins, Minnesota. For nearly 16 years, the company has combined John Deere engines and Funk Powershift transmissions to build some of the most powerful mechanical and hydraulic-
driven diggers and drills on the market today. "John Deere torque curves hang in at a desirable range for us
when we're digging," explains Todd. "And Funk transmissions give us a deep reduction that we need to achieve the power."
Highway Manufacturing is long known for its expertise in building pressure diggers for the electric utility industry.
The company's largest digger delivers 70,512 Newton-meters (52,000 ft-lb) of rotary torque. Powering this unit is the Tier 3/Stage III A PowerTech E 4045HF285, rated at 86 kW (115 hp). The engine drives a 3-speed Series 2000 Powershift transmission, with a maximum input torque rating of 1,627 Nm (1,200 lb-ft). Northstar Power of Ankeny, Iowa, supplies
both the engine and transmission, adding value by supplying Highway Manufacturing with a complete power unit and sheet-metal enclosure. After years of building pressure diggers, Highway
Manufacturing recently introduced the FD series of foundation
drills that can be mounted on either a truck chassis or tracked undercarriage. In first gear, the FD series delivers
82,716 Newton-meters (61,000 ft-lb) of rotary torque. It's powered by a 93-kW (125 hp) PowerTech E 4045T engine
and a Series 2000 Powershift transmission.
"The advantage of the FD series foundation drill is its ability to perform larger jobs with a smaller, compact package,"
explains Todd, adding that the machine is ideally suited to dig holes to install caisson and piers for building construction and electrical work. "These foundation drills offer easy maneuverability and set up," he adds, "and there's no need for special transportation permits."
Knowing that these diggers and drills work far and wide,
Highway Manufacturing values the service and support of the nationwide John Deere dealer network. "The ability to use the John Deere dealer network has been very helpful,"
says Todd. "You could be working almost anywhere in North America, there's likely to be a John Deere dealer or service center nearby. We're very happy with that."
