Overview of Vortex Tubes
Vortex tubes are devices that utilize compressed air to produce cold and hot air streams without any moving parts, making them maintenance-free and reliable for industrial cooling applications. ITW Vortec has been a pioneer in this technology, offering solutions for spot cooling and thermal testing.
Specifications and Models
The document details various models of vortex tubes with different air consumption and cooling capacities. For instance, model 106-2-H uses 2 SCFM to produce 100 BTUH, while model 328-100-H uses 100 SCFM to produce 6000 BTUH, all based on an inlet pressure of 100 PSIG.
Operating Principles
Vortex tubes function by spinning compressed air at high speeds to separate it into cold and hot streams, with the cold air reaching temperatures up to 100°F below the inlet air temperature. A control valve allows for temperature adjustments.
Applications
These tubes are used in cooling machine operations, drying ink, setting solders, dehumidifying gas samples, and more, including packaging equipment and laboratory testing.
Cold Air Guns
Cold Air Guns use vortex tube technology for spot cooling in industrial processes, enhancing production rates and tool life. Models like the 610 Adjustable Cold Air Gun offer adjustable temperature and airflow settings.
Enclosure Coolers
Vortex Coolers maintain optimal temperatures in electrical enclosures, preventing overheating and equipment shutdowns. They are reliable and affordable solutions for control panels and electronic components.
Maintenance and Installation
Vortex tubes require minimal maintenance and should be used with filtered and dried compressed air. Installation is straightforward, with options for noise reduction and flexible nozzle configurations.
Overview of Vortex Coolers and Cold Pump Systems
These systems provide efficient cooling for industrial enclosures and personal comfort, using vortex tube technology to generate cold air without refrigerants, offering a low-maintenance alternative to traditional air conditioning.
Specifications
Vortex Coolers have cooling capacities from 400 to 5000 BTUH, maintaining NEMA 4, 4X, and 12 ratings, and are UL-listed. Cold Pump systems offer 1800 to 6000 BTUH capacities, available in 115V and 230V models.
Features
Vortex Coolers are compact and easy to install, creating positive pressure to prevent dust ingress. Cold Pump systems are thermostatically controlled, using CFC-free refrigerants with features like digital thermostats and high-temperature alarms.
Applications
Vortex Coolers are used in computer control panels, robotic welding stations, and baking ovens. Cold Pump systems cool heat-sensitive electronics in control panels and enclosures.
Personal Air Conditioners
ITW Vortec offers Personal Air Conditioners with Diffuse-Air Vests for worker comfort in extreme temperatures, popular in industries like foundries and steel mills.
Energy Efficiency
ITW Vortec's air nozzles and jets reduce compressed air consumption and noise, amplifying airflow volume significantly, resulting in cost savings and compliance with OSHA specifications.
Overview of Nozzles, Jets, and Sprayvectors
These products deliver precise airflow for tasks such as cleaning, drying, cooling, and parts movement, designed to save air and meet OSHA noise specifications.
Specifications
Nozzles and jets like models 1200, 1201, and 1203 offer different airstream sizes. Sprayvectors provide ultra-fine droplet sprays for cooling and humidification.
Applications
Vortec nozzles and jets are used for cleaning sawdust, ejecting parts from molds, and reducing air consumption. Sprayvectors are used for cooling engine parts and humidifying storage rooms.
Cost and Efficiency
The document provides a guide for calculating the annual operating cost of blowoffs, highlighting cost savings by switching to Vortec products.
Recommendations
Use pressure regulators to adjust air pressure to the minimum necessary level. Replace large open tube jets with smaller nozzles to optimize air spray patterns and reduce waste.
Overview of Air Amplifiers and Transvectors
Round Transvectors use compressed air to generate large airflow for conveying, ventilation, drying, and cooling, requiring no machine guards and meeting OSHA noise requirements.
Specifications and Models
Round Transvectors are available in models with varying specifications for air consumption and amplification, including stainless steel versions for purity and resistance to corrosion.
Applications
Transvectors are used for conveying materials, ventilating fumes, cooling, and drying products, with specific uses in pharmaceuticals and automotive manufacturing.
Hand-E-Vac and Dual-Force Vac
The Hand-E-Vac is a handheld vacuum gun for cleaning materials, while the Dual-Force Vac is a drum pump for liquid handling, both offering efficient operation with safety features.

Vortex Tubes With our models ranging from approximately 6” to 13” long, Vortex Tubes are a very compact source of refrigeration and spot cooling capability. They are designed to utilize a filtered compressed air supply of 80 - 110 PSIG. Pressures lower than 80 PSIG will still provide some cooling, but temperature drops and flows are reduced due to the lower inlet pressures. To prepare the air source, an appropriate filter/separator must be used, placed as near to the Vortex Tube as possible. ITW Vortec’s Auto-Drain filters-separators incorporate a 5 micron filter that effectively removes dirt,...
