Notes and explanations The advantages of such solutions are obvious: Decentralised automation Practical people have long since seen the advantages of decentralised auto-mation. Whereas a few years ago the tendency was to controllers becoming bigger and bigger and more and more powerful for the central control of an installation, the tendency is now to distributed solutions. Important func- tions are immediately processed locally in a small decentralised controller. Only important information is then transmitted to a central processor. Shorter and clearer programs, thus easier commissioningof plant sections.Less downtime because if individual stations fail the installationcontinues to operate on a restricted scale.Reduced cabling, exchange of data between the controllersvia bus systems.Easier, quicker mounting and expansion options. Consistent project management and programming due to thecommon standard of the “Automation Alliance”.Due to its easy structure AS-i is an excellent choice for being used betweensensors / actuators and decentralised controllers.

Possibilities of slave addressing

Using theaddressing unit the slaves can be easily pro- grammed via cable.

In addition to the tried and tested conventional (offline) addressing method of the AS-i slaves there are further technologies which allow addressing of the units after mounting:1. via a mechanical addressing socket or2. via an infrared addressing interface. Thus all AS-i components can be mechanically preinstalled without specialpreliminary knowledge. Addressing can then be carried out later on as des- cribed in the documentation.
