Strain gage materials and options

This chapter provides background information about strain gage construction, materials and options for HBM strain gages. Nickel Nickel is used for the manufacture of foil-based resistors for compensating the temperature of the zero point and the span of a transducer. Its tempera- ture coefficient of resistance is 4.9 x 10 Modco

Grid materials

Modco is an alloy of nickel and chromium. The gage factor is around 2.2, thereby enabling a slightly higher output signal of the transducer. Modco has a higher specific resistance than constantan and is often used for high- resistance gages. For most applications on aluminum and steel, additional nickel resistors are not necessary anymore for compensating the temperature of the nominal value of the transducer (Tc span). Modco is more expensive than constantan. Constantan is an alloy of copper and nickel. It is the standard material for transducer gages in terms of cost effectiveness and performance. The gage factor is around 2. For high-accuracy transducers, the use of a nickel resistor is required for compensating the temperature of the transducer output signals. Constantan
