Gasket Selection

° F (260 ° C). Inaccordance with ASME B16.20, an inner ring is re-quired when using conventional PTFE filler materials, in order to protect the winding from radial buckling.See page D-19 for the temperature limits of com-mon metals and filler materials.

Sprial Wound Gaskets

One of the best all-around seals, the spiral woundgasket offers a low-cost solution that has the ability tohandle temperature and pressure fluctuations. Multipleplies of metal and filler in the spiral create a barrier that reduces the possibility of leaks.

Other Metal Gaskets

Garlock manufactures a wide variety of double-jacketed, spiral-wound, metal-clad and solid metalgaskets for heat exchanger manufacturer and coker applications.GRAPHONIC

Operating Pressure

Operating pressures have a direct effect on theconstruction and selection of metallic gaskets. Higher pressures raise the potential for gasket blowout, whilelower pressure applications require a gasket designthat seals under lower bolt loads.Garlock gaskets suitable for high pressure include:
® and Kammprofile gaskets are alsoavailable in heat exchanger configurations. â–  Kammprofile gaskets

Temperature and ChemicalConsiderations

â–  Spiral wound gaskets with inner ring â–  Solid metal gasketsLow pressure gaskets include: Be certain that the gasket you order is as resistantas possible to the media and temperature involved. Check the chemical compatibility of the metal as wellas the filler material for the media to be sealed. As ageneral rule, the metal used in either the spiral winding or double-jacketed gasket should be similar to theflange material. The compressibility of flexible graphite makes it anexcellent filler material for metallic gaskets. Flexiblegraphite may be used in services with temperatures upto 950 â–  GRAPHONIC

® gasket ° F (485 ° C), though it should not be used withstrong oxidizers such as nitric or sulfuric acid. PTFE filler material provides excellent chemicalresistance at temperatures below 500
