| | | The procedure for measuring plumbness of a vertical turbine shaft is a straightforward operation, very similar to traditional methods with wires and a sound micrometer. The laser transmitter is positioned at the lower end of the shaft and measurement readings are taken with a detector unit probing against the shaft surface. The first reading is taken at the top, and subsequent readings move down the shaft towards the transmitter. The detector is returned to the top position to verify accuracy. Four sets of these readings are taken, one in each quadrant (i.e., north, south, east and west). The four measurement results are stored in the display unit, and then transferred to a PC for final calculation. The measurement is a straightness measurement in one axis, but the two-axes detector provides for increased accuracy while it guides the operator in positioning the detector correctly on the shaft curvature. | | |
