SMC even more flexible: pins, spacing, layout No, we won’t be resting on our laurels. On the contrary: the success of a product family heightens the demand for further variations. Knowing ERNI quality, users are now looking for even more connector varieties. What that means for our designers is more sleepless nights as they try to cover all individual customer requests with products that offer as great a bandwidth as possible. The result? Male and female multipoint connectors with further pin counts (16, 20, 32, 40) from 2009. The total of nine SMC connector types available now come in three heights, making continuous spacings of anything between 8 and 20 mm possible. Our new product for mezzanine concepts are board-to-board adapters for 20-40 mm spacings. Enhance current carrying capacity The efficiency of the SMC series is not by any means exhausted. Thanks to optimized pin configuration and efficient heat dissipation through thicker copper layers between connector and PCB, the current carrying capacity has been significantly increased from 0.9 A to 1.8 A at 70 °C. That delivers a further career boost to the successful series. In the pipeline: MicroSMC Like in that old cult film “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”, we have shrunk the SMC and reduced the pin pitch from 1.27 mm to 0.8 mm. Not, of course, by mistake (as in the film), but instead in order to offer a proven and flexible design basis for the further miniaturization of electronic components. Yet the critical quality characteristics of ERNI SMC connectors have remained the same: double-sided spring contacts, cable termination and full SMT compatibility - and all that in variants with 12 to 140 pins. Taken together with the optimized current carrying capacity, we anticipate that the MicroSMC offers comparable performance to its big SMC brothers and sisters.
