Corporate History

Engis Corporation was founded by Julius P. Steindler in 1938 as an import-export company with locations inthe USAand UK. The company became involved in government projects during World War II which demanded extensive polishing on newly developed hard metals; the abrasive chosen to meet this challenge was diamond. Engis designed and perfected grading techniques which led to the creation of precision graded diamond powders. This initial project launched Engis into superabrasives and set the course for the company to become the “Leader in Superabrasive Finishing Systems”. Superabrasives remain the core product of the company to this day.As the Superabrasive Finishing Industry evolved, Engis recognized the need for equipment to support thepolishing operations. This resulted in the design of equipment and accessories which have come to be known as the Engis Systems Approach. As the company grew, the use of superabrasives expanded to include the manufacture of plated grinding products and bore finishing tools. Following the Engis Systems Approach, bore finishing systems were added to the line of products manufactured.In the early 1960’s, Engis recognized the overseas opportunities for its products and, as a result, strategicassociations were formed in Asia and Europe. In 1983 Engis Japan was formed as a joint venture to become the Asian Technology Center for the Engis Group. During the 1990’s Engis Korea, Engis Hong Kong and Engis Asia Pacific were added to the new worldwide organization. In 1994 Engis UK Ltd. was reorganized and became a subsidiary of Engis Corporation serving as the Technology Center in Europe.
