Frigorífico São Miguel Ltda, which produces processed food, such as seasoned steaks, bacon, sausage and ham products, from pork under the Friella label, worked with Eaton to develop a networked, automated machine control solution for production, packaging, and refrigeration. The Eaton solution features SmartWire-DT, which is used for the automated machine control in which 278 motors are controlled in four different areas and networked via the connection and communication system. The Friella plant is responsible for the entire pork meat processing operation—from the pig sty, slaughter, processing in the slaughter house, cutting room and processing machines, as well as primary and final packaging and refrigeration. The plant chose an Eaton control system including XTPE manual motor protectors, XT contactors, SmartWire-DT, PLCs, HMIs, Remote I/Os, power supply units as well as M22 pilot devices. An XC200 modular PLC, which controls the installation, is networked with a SCADA system and nine XV HMI touch panels installed in different areas. PLCs, HMIs, XI/ON remote I/O and SmartWire-DT are integrated in the entire system via Ethernet and CANopen. The installation includes 278 motors, which are controlled and operated in four different areas, and are linked via the SmartWire-DT connection and communication system. Using SmartWire-DT all motors can be monitored completely from the control system, including the feedback signals such as states or other process data sent from the XTPE manual motor protectors and contactors. This allows fast diagnostics and ensures an efficient production of the entire plant. The Eaton solution requires fewer control cabinets, less maintenance, and components can be exchanged rapidly and simply if required. The installation at the Friella plant had to be implemented with reduced wiring, in which highly reliable production had to be ensured as the highest priority.
