If you want to calculate a tool length, before all you have to define an origin for the spindle axis coinciding with the spindle nose. For this purpose, a presetter on the working table can be used. If it is not available, you can keep a piece of any height for presetting operations. The origin that you use for presetting tools must not be used as work piece origin. For example, you can use origin OZ9 to preset tools. OZ9 = 0

1) Unload the tool from the spindle and deactivate length correction. Normally you can do this with the MDI command T0M6. 2) Move the spindle axis in order to touch the presetter or the work piece. 3) Press ORIGINS AND LENGTHS – F5 The
CN is ready to define a new origin. ( NEW ORIGIN button highlighted) The dialog line becomes the following: 4) Write the name of the spindle axis, Z for example, and press ENTER . 5) Write the number or the character that identifies the origin, for example 9 , and press ENTER. 6) Write in the Quota field and press ENTER . 7) Press F10 to confirm. The origin is calculated and activated: the origin and the written quota will appear in the axes panel. The origin is saved in the file 126 of the CMOS. >
