A water gauge is a device that allows the liquid level in a vessel to be visually inspected. Water gauges are required by the ASME Boiler and Pressure Code on steam boilers, and are also useful in many other applications, such as monitoring the amount of oil in an oil tank. THINGS TO REMEMBER Care must be given to ensure the proper selection of a water gauge. Three types of glass packing, EPDM rubber, Hypalon®, and Virgin Teflon®, are included in the standard repair kit. For oil related service, Fluorelastomer (Viton®) glass gasket sets are available. Remove all glass packing, packing nuts, washers and packing glands, noting their positions on the glass. 6. Clean and inspect gauge glass and fittings for any wear, erosion, cracks or debris. Any damaged components must be replaced. 7. If it is desired, the stem packing can be replaced by removing the handle(s) then the stem packing nut.
