Safe without Driver

April 2007 The flat screen manufacturer Samsung Electronics equip their driverless transport systems with a safety controller, that takes over the monitoring of all the necessary safety components and substantially simplifies wiring. Samsung Electric in Korea is one of the world’s largest flat screen manufacturers. Production at Samsung is highly automated. To transport the glass panels for the flat screens between the individual manufacturing steps, so-called AGVs (A utomatically G uided V ehicle) are used. In order to eliminate the risk of accidents, the “blind” AGVs are equipped with various safety components such as safety bumpers, safety light curtains and emergency stop buttons. When Samsung went in search of a safety controller which could simultaneously monitor the emergency stop button, the safety bumpers and the safety light curtain, they discovered CEDES. Samsung fitted their AGVs with the SafeC 400 safety controller. Alongside the multiple component monitoring and the simplicity of the cabling, the engineers at Samsung were convinced by the ease of which the controller is configured. All the safety components could be calibrated for ‘auto-start’ in accordance with the EN 60204 with just a few mouse clicks and the regulations for the official semiconductor test center were effortlessly fulfilled.
