Increasing global demand for raw materials in recent years has led to mining companies redoubling their efforts to increase production capacity. This also applies to mining companies extracting ores using hard rock mining techniques, in particular block caving. The discontinuous material haulage with modern LHD vehicles in traditional block caving operations facilitates only marginal increase in production capacity, largely because of the bottleneck caused by vehicles shuttling backwards and forwards, and limited space available underground. For this reason, Caterpillar teamed up with a...

The Cat® Rock Flow Principle Continuous haulage for increased productivity Traditional Block Caving Block cave mining, or block caving, is a mass-mining method that allows for the bulk mining of large, relatively lower grade, ore bodies. This special mining technique is used in many underground mines around the world. In block caving undercut and haulage levels are driven under the ore body, and funnel-shaped “drawbells” are excavated above the undercut. The ore body is drilled and blasted at undercut level. This causes it to fracture and cave via the drawbell to the drawpoint. As ore is...

The Caterpillar Approach: Continuous Haulage For this reason, Caterpillar has developed a new technology that radically changes the way in which ore is removed following caving. It replaces the batch approach with the continuous Rock Flow method. Rock Flow is achieved when there is continuous caving, removal from the drawpoint, breaking and conveying. The LHD at the drawpoint is replaced by a Rock Feeder. This device pushes the rock into the haulage access, where it drops onto a hard rock production conveyor. The Cat® Rock Flow Benefits: • Multiple increase in production • Significant...

System Overview Technical specifications The Cat Rock Flow Technology The Cat Rock Flow System is an innovative technology to achieve a smooth and constant flow of ore-bearing rock from drawpoints to bunkers. The system comprises the following components, all centrally controlled from a remote location: • Rock Feeder to remove ore from the drawpoint • Rock Conveyor to feed ore into the crusher • Belt conveyor to transport rock to bunker • Automation to control and smooth the production process Rock Feeder RF300 The Rock Feeder – which replaces the LHD in the Rock Flow system – is a...

Automation Providing the highest level of functionality and safety State-of-the-art Automation Each Rock Feeder has its own electronic control, which controls automated operation, as well as recording operational data such as pressures and stroke frequency. All Rock Feeder controls are linked to a server, which is in turn linked to a central control room. An already available Draw Management System can be linked to the Rock Flow Automation system. Control System: • One data world (EIP) • Control and visualization of other subsystem • Load depended conveyor control Draw Control: • Selective...
